Testimonials

I had the pleasure of serving as Avery Baker’s Country Director for his 2 year Peace Corps Volunteer service. Avery completed his service as a respected and accomplished Peace Corps Volunteers. Avery proved himself to be adaptable and resourceful. Every Peace Corps assignment in Vanuatu is difficult; however, Avery overcame more than his share of obstacles. Avery did not have access to running water or electricity. Avery never complained about the lack of amenities at his site, instead Avery used his cross cultural and language training to build credibility and adapted quickly to his new environment.

Avery took his mission as a water and sanitation development worker seriously and provided much needed support to his community in the form of training and management. He aligned himself closely to the Peace Corps’ model of sustainability; this required that he focus on transferring skills to community members. Many volunteers become frustrated and simply give-up. Avery persevered and made sure that the skills he transferred will be utilized long after his service is completed. He was patient and insightful, taking the time to learn and understand the nuances of relationships within his community that many volunteers miss. He also saw that well intended, but misguided development projects can be of little or no value in the long term.

Avery is a natural leader with excellent communication skills. Avery understood the project design and management process and was successful in cultivating a shared community vision to address the needs of the community. Avery successfully managed a USAID funded water project for his community. He helped plan and manage events addressing issues relevant to the Vanuatu youth, such as gender based violence, sexual reproductive health, and community development. The community leader recognized Avery’s leadership by granting him a special position in the community as a custom chief.

Avery is an exuberant and energetic young person, with the focus and determination to complete the

most rigorous graduate program. Prior to joining the staff of Peace Corps, I served in various capacities in executive management in State and Local government in California for over 25+ years. I had the good fortune to meet and facilitate the promotion of a small number of special, talented young men and women.

Avery is an individual among our younger generation that I recommend without hesitation or reservation.

Keith Honda,
Former Country Director Peace Corps Vanuatu
Director Third Goal and Return Volunteer Services (Current)

Avery is a dynamic development practitioner with a wide array of skills and experiences. During his time in the Master’s in Development Practice (MDP) Program at the University of Arizona, Avery undertook an innovative field practicum focused on high-altitude agriculture in Nepal, producing some important insights for farmers in the era of global climate change. Avery’s MDP studies built upon his service in the Peace Corps in the remote and challenging environment of the Republic of Vanuatu in the Pacific, where he worked tirelessly to improve access to healthcare for local residents. Across these and many other experiences, Avery has proven to be a resourceful and adaptable professional with a bright future ahead. With a positive mindset and constructive attitude, Avery would be an asset to many organizations.
